Explained: UK’s ‘learn English or leave’ rule and cut to post-study visa duration

The UK government has introduced new immigration reforms requiring A-level English proficiency for certain visa routes and shortening the post-study work period to 18 months from January 2027. Student visa applicants must show higher financial capacity from the 2025–2026 academic year. The Immigration Skills Charge will increase by 32%. High-skilled routes, including HPI and Global Talent, will expand, with more opportunities for top graduates and entrepreneurs. The measures aim to make the immigration system more selective and controlled.
