California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Assembly Bill 268, officially recognising Diwali as a state holiday starting in 2026. However, schools and offices will remain open for Diwali 2025, which falls on October 20. From 2026 onwards, state employees can take paid leave, and schools may close if approved by local boards and unions.
